Juliann Nichols started her first business, a mobile DJ company, at 16. Four decades later she is still building.
Nine months into running a private investigation agency, a prospect asked if her firm did surveillance. She said yes, built the team, and won a $565,000 statewide contract. Then she had to hire ten investigators almost overnight, and she nearly lost the whole thing. Lesson one: be prepared for success.
Years later she went to sell that agency. The CPA looked at the books and said, “You can’t sell it. It depends too much on you.” It took another 18 months of building processes, expectations, systems, and training before it was ready. Lesson two: the more valuable you are to your business, the less valuable your business is.
She launched a luxury handbag line and sold more bags to traveling businessmen at airport bars than to the women she expected to buy them. Lesson three: your market is wherever your buyers actually are.
In 2007 she founded JULO Strategy Global to spare other owners from learning it all the hard way. Every program JULO runs today comes from those lessons.
